The Impact of Diet on Workers Compensation.

Obesity is on the rise and, as a result, it’s been a major driver of healthcare costs. Not only that, an unhealthy diet, along with subsequent weight gain, leads to a less productive workforce, more absenteeism and losing focus while on the job.

Unfortunately, those that are overweight due to unhealthy diets experience more injuries in the workplace, which has a profound impact on workers compensation including:

Increased medical costs. Overweight and obese employee claims cost up to 7 times more than similar claims in non-overweight workers.

Disability risk. These workers are also more likely to become permanently disabled.

Increased frequency of injury. Recent research has found that overweight and obsese workers filed twice as many workers compensation claims as their non-overweight colleagues.

Severity of injuries. Obese and overweight employees experience more severe injuries due to their extra weight, which generates force during an accident. As there is more impact, in the case of a fall or slip, damage to joints, back, knees and ankles can occur.

Here at Hoys Work Health, we can facilitate health programs aimed at improving the overall health and well-being of employees, with an emphasis on providing ongoing support to assist positive behaviour and lifestyle changes including exercise programs, diet programs, and stress management. Improved health can positively impact not only productivity, but job satisfaction.

Help Your Headaches

Do you sometimes feel dizzy or get headaches when you move your head?

Dizziness has a variety of causes that include tight neck muscles, stiff neck joints and problems with your balance systems (Tamber, Bruusgaard & Bruusgaard, 2014; Tavanai et al, 2013). If you do occasionally get feelings of dizziness with or without headaches and neck pain then physiotherapy may be able to help you.

Recent studies into dizziness have found that physiotherapy interventions are often effective in alleviating symptoms such as neck pain, dizziness, poor balance and decreased range of movement (Arnold et al, 2015; Reid et al, 2014a; Reid et al, 2014b).

By assessing a client’s balance, range of movement, eye follow and vestibular system a physiotherapist can identify the potential cause of dizziness and develop an effective treatment plan or refer to a specialist (Arnold et al, 2015).

So, if you get dizziness, feel unsteady on your feet or have regular headaches and neck pain then book in to see your local physiotherapist for thorough assessment and treatment.

You are what you eat.

That old saying ‘you are what you eat’ has never been truer than today. With so much processed and packaged food out there, filled with chemicals, artificial sweeteners and more, it’s no wonder we’re finding it easy to gain weight and difficult to lose it.

If you’re not feeling the best, have put on weight, lack energy or can’t get a good night’s sleep, then maybe it’s time to address that saying, ‘you are what you eat’ and reassess your diet.

By changing your diet, you could end up with some amazing benefits – which we’ve listed below:

Better mood. There is emerging evidence that there is a close relationship between diet and mood.

More energy! Our bodies derive energy from the food we eat, so the more nutritious fuel you put in your body, the more energy you’ll have!

Helps maintain a healthy weight. Eating a diet filled with vegetables, fruits, protein, whole grains and protein will assist with a healthy body weight. It’s also a great way to control blood pressure and cholesterol.

Maintains your immune system. One of the most common causes of immunodeficiencies worldwide is poor nutrition. To assist with maintaining your immune system, you need to get a proper intake of vitamins and minerals, which can be done by eating a well-balanced diet.

Less risk of chronic disease. Type 2 diabetes has been increasingly seen in younger ages due to unhealthy eating and weight gain. Type 2 diabetes often leads to kidney failure and blindness amongst others. It’s crucial to establish the importance of eating a healthy diet as early on as possible.

At Hoys Allied Health & Wellness, our Accredited Practising Dietitians can help you overhaul your diet and get you on the road to a healthier you. Contact us today to book your appointment on 02 6652 7355.
